Four great women influenced my early years...

It was my very great fortune  to be recognized by my first Ballet teacher Jacqueta Northcote for being a leader. Jacqueta trained & toured with The Royal Ballet (London, England), Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and The National Ballet of Canada. She saw that I was  not cut out for la troupe, but belonged "out front".

Jacqueta gave me leading roles in Les Deux Pigeons, Le Ballet Degas, as the Chinese & Russian Gopak Dancers in our performances of The Nutcracker and , Vivalds' Four Seasons.  Our school came from Ottawa to Place des Arts yearly & saw The Bolshoi,The Royal Ballet and The Kirov ; and experenced food from lands abroad. The Pam Pam restaurant, Greek Baklava, rice cakes & partaking in other cultures, lit me up like a Chritsmas tree!
I felt truly at home in Montreal among the multitude of ethnicities & colours!
 

Prior to her return to  England, Jaqueta brought me to audition for Ludmilla Chiriaeffe, Founder of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. Ludmilla also  saw my potential and gifted me with full scholarships for 6 years, while en route to the company. There I performed at Place des Arts in Casse Noisette. As a youngster it was a thrill  to run along the red carpeted halls of PDA during break time!

Following my second year exams, I was instructed by Ludmilla to go to Toronto to be seen by
Dr. Virgin at The Welsley Orthopedic Hospital : the specialist who had recently performed a "slipped tendon" operation on Bruce Kidd, Canada's Olympic runner.  

 

A gentle & wise spirit of 65, stated after only 5 minutes of examining me:  in 6 months I would be crippled
and  wheel chair-bound for the rest of my life!   Apparently I was "blessed" with a hereditary abnormality of a contracting Achilles tendon.
God be Praised  for that man and for Ludmilla - who had insight into my condition. They saved my Life!

 

Hospitalized for ten days of excruciating pain & depression - due to the medication given: I  dropped down to 80 pounds. At a mere 5'3" , I was anorexic, but felt  as huge as an elephant.  I began my first year of high school in 2 knee- casts, feeling like a nerd.

Following one year of physio;  my dream of becoming a Classical dancer was shattered. I was then moved into the Teachers Training Program with Les Grands.
This was a huge turning point in my life!  

For the next 3 years, I took my Teaching certifications with Les Grands Ballets, and that of The Royal Ballet in Classical).  I also completed my I.S.T.D Certification in Modern Dance (now called Contemporary) and  certification in International Character Dance,  which I loved.

My shift from dancer to teacher literally broke me.

Thankfully there were 2 women who "saved me" in, and following University:
Norma Springford, Head of the Theatre Arts Department at Sir George Williams University (Concordia); who sat on The Canada Council for the Arts. Norma advised me to study makeup with Ed Shrimpton, Head of the Makeup Department at the CBC (Radio Canada).  Overwhelmed by the idea,  I moved into theatre, fashion & corporate makeup. Later on however  I pursued TV & film with Ed, as well as the next  Head of Makeup, at CBC, Jacques Lafleur.
 

With Jacques  I worked  (among others) at Theatre du Rideau Vert doing makeup for the Jean Duceppe plays; and, at Place Des Arts, for The Kirov Ballet of Russia, making up to the lead dancers in Swan Lake!  WOW!
For a dancer - what an extraordinary opportunity!

Iona Monahan of the Gazette, and the Recipient of The Order of Canada for her contribution to the Fashion Industry; hired me as a young makeup artist on the fashion scene. She must have had incredible insight because she gave me Carte-Blanche for every shoot over the following decade. I was so avant-garde; that I only saw makeup designs similar to my own -10 years after, in European Vogue. 
|While in makeup, I found some form of happiness...but as a performing artist, I still felt unfulfilled.
 

In retrospect, I was VERY BLESSED;  since these events & persons shaped my becoming the person I am today. I was later to discover that I am a natural-born pedagogue: thanks to Ludmilla Chiriaeff.

 Who would know - what breaks you is sometimes our greatest gift.
For my entire past, I am TRULY GRATEFUL, and would not change a thing.

Quatre femmes ont eu  beaucoup d’influence sur moi dans ma jeunesse.

Mon premier professeur de ballet émérite Jacqueta Northcote as entraînée au Royal Ballet de Londres. Elle a également dansé avec le Ballets du Festival de Cannes et Le Ballet National du Canada. Elle a su que j’ai été première danseuse, et non pas crée pour la troupe de danse.

 

Précédant  son retour en Angleterre,  Jacqueta  m’a fait auditionner par Ludmilla Chiriaeffe, fondatrice des Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal.  Celle-ci  m’a remis des bourses sur une période de 6 ans, me permettant de poursuivre des études préparatoires pour la troupe.  J’ai participée à plusieurs reprises au spectacle Casse- Noisette à la Place des Arts. Quel grand honneur vécu avec allégresse.

J’ai dû subir une opération sévère aux talons d’Achille à l’âge de 13 ans,  annulant du même coup mon rêve de devenir  danseuse classique de ballet.  Du coup je suis tombée dans une profonde dépression, mon souhait le plus cher s’envolant en fumée. 

Mon sauvetage est venu  de Norma Springford, chef de département  du théâtre de l’Université Sir George Williams (Concordia). Elle était aussi membre du Conseil National des Arts. Celle-ci m’a suggéré de travailler avec Ed  Shrimpton, chef du département de maquillage de Radio-Canada. En plus du maquillage de théâtre, mode,  corpo au départ,  ça m’a permis de faire du maquillage de télévision et de film avec Ed et Jacues Lafleur (chef du département de maquillage de Radio-Canada, apre Ed Shripmton).

Cette expérience acquise  fût pour moi  un cadeau du Ciel puisque reconnue pour mon talent de maquilleuse, je fûts engagée  par Iona  Monahan, récipiendaire de l’Ordre du Canada  pour sa contribution envers l’Industrie de la mode. J’ai  reçu  de cette grande dame carte blanche pour les dix années à venir.

Toutes ces personnes et circonstances nous concernant font de moi une personne comblée et pleine de gratitude envers la vie.
